Achille

My Dear Japhet
The feeling which has driven the letter from Monsieur -------- is quite natural: in his place I would have reacted similarly.
I am going to give you the information he asks for.
My father is of Italian origin son and grandson of honourable magistrates who have held a certain rank in Italy. He lost his father at the age of 9 years and was married very young to a woman who he had the misfortune to lose after two years. From this first marriage there remains a son who is now a Professor at the Atheneum of Brussels. To dispel his sorrows and distress, my father spent several years travelling, returning then to Bologna, the town of his birth and afterwards, on the death of his mother, he left for Milan, where he served on Napoleon’s guard of honour.
On the fall of the Empire he went to Paris and there married my mother. He stayed 33 years in that capital becoming naturalized French when I started at the Polytechnic school.
The revolutions in France and in Italy and unhappy business ventures have caused him to lose considerable sums. His income is now reduced to F2400: F600 coming from mortgages placed in Bologna and F1800 from French and Spanish bonds which were placed in my mother’s hands and remained with her after my father’s death. After adding the F500 of annual rent which I make to my sister, my mother is perfectly sure she will never be a burden to anyone.
That is my family’s position: if Monsieur P wishes further information I could give it to him more easily at Rochfort if he would like me to visit him.
Until soon, my dear Japhet, I shake very cordially your hand.
Achille
